February 2nd is a day our family anticipates with delight every year—it’s Crêpe Day, or La Chandeleur!
This special occasion is celebrated in France with both tradition and joy.

The Origins of La Chandeleur

The name “Chandeleur” comes from the Latin word candelorum, meaning “candles.” Traditionally, this Christian celebration marks the day Jesus was presented at the temple, 40 days after Christmas. In earlier times, candles were lit during processions, symbolizing purification and light.

However, the history of La Chandeleur runs deeper, with roots in pre-Christian rituals. It’s said that the festival draws inspiration from the Roman Lupercalia, a celebration of fertility and purification. During this event, torches were lit to drive away evil spirits and welcome spring. Similarly, the Celtic Imbolc festival honored the goddess Brigid, who symbolized light and fertility, celebrating the transition from winter to spring. These ancient traditions, centered on light and renewal, may have shaped the customs of La Chandeleur.

Why Crêpes?

Crêpes take center stage on La Chandeleur because their golden, round appearance resembles the sun, a perfect symbol of light and warmth returning as winter gives way to spring. This tradition also has practical roots: historically, farmers used up their remaining flour to make crêpes, hoping for a prosperous harvest in the coming months.

There’s also a playful superstition tied to crêpe-making. If you flip a crêpe with your right hand while holding a gold coin (pièce d’or) in your left, good fortune is said to follow. Our family enjoys this charming ritual every year, turning it into a fun game that brings out everyone’s competitive spirit!

Crêpe Day in Our Family

In our family, La Chandeleur is a time for togetherness and delicious fun. When our daughters were younger, my husband prepared the crêpe batter and showed them how to flip crêpes. Their early, timid attempts soon gave way to giggles and excitement as they perfected their flips.

Every year, she holds a 1-euro coin in her hand and eagerly competes to see how many flips she can manage without dropping the crêpe. My husband joins in, but she remains undefeated! 😊 While the original symbolism of the tradition may be overshadowed, the laughter and joy it brings to our family are priceless.

The Joy of La Chandeleur

La Chandeleur is a delightful celebration of light, renewal, and family. Hosting a crêpe party with loved ones is a wonderful way to embrace this French tradition.

When I lived in France, my host family had a special crêpe maker that allowed everyone to cook their own crêpes at the table. We would gather around, flipping crêpes, adding toppings, and sharing stories – it’s one of my fondest memories from my time there.

At home, our family gets creative with toppings. From simple sugar and jam to rich chocolate spread (Nutella), maple syrup, and even peanut butter, everyone customizes their crêpes to suit their taste. The Flexibility of crêpes is part of what makes them so fun and special to enjoy together.

Drinks to Pair with Crêpe

In France, crêpes are traditionally paired with cidre—a sparkling apple drink loved in Bretagne and Normandie. Its crisp acidity and delicate sweetness perfectly complement the sugary delight of crêpes or the savory flavor of galettes.

If cidre isn’t available, sparkling wine or a fragrant cup of tea are excellent substitutes. For kids, apple juice or hot chocolate make delightful pairings. Every year, our family enjoys sipping on cidre we’ve discovered here in Berlin—it’s become a cherished part of our celebration.
